Standard grade rifle with 28" blued octagon barrel with full magazine, German silver Rocky Mountain front sight, and Marlin semi-buckhorn rear sight. Top flat of barrel has 2nd type roll marking of "J.M. MARLIN" with arrows at each end. Rifle has very early 2nd type figured, slab-sawed, uncheckered American walnut straight stock and smooth steel semi-crescent buttplate. It is unclear how many of these transition 81s were made, but few survive today, and, therefore, are a desirable addition to a Marlin collection. CONDITION: Overall good with barrel and magazine tube retaining about 20% original thin blue finish turning to a silver/gray patina. Receiver retains traces of dull blue with balance fading to a silver/gray patina. Rear tang screw has damage marks. Lever and hammer retain fading case colors. Wood is sound with original finish worn away. Good bore with shiny lands and dark grooves. Good mechanics.
