A stunning example of a Civil War presentation grade M1850 Staff and Field Officer's sword that features a 1" wide blade with wide fuller that is decorated for about half its length with etched patriotic and foliate motifs. The obverse blade features beautifully executed foliate scrolls along with panoplies of arms and the letters "U.S." at center. Reverse features similar designs with patriotic banner and spread-winged federal eagle at center. Marked "W.H. HORSTMANN / & SONS / PHILADELPHIA" just above the ricasso. The blade is in excellent condition, remaining bright with only a few scattered blemishes. Guard features excellent open scrollwork with bold letters "US" at center. Wood grip, grooved and wrapped with sharkskin and strands of twisted brass wire. Pommel with foliate scrolls that lead to a tiered cap. Hilt exhibits scattered oxidation which could be cleaned but exhibits a nice patina. Complete with steel scabbard that features a wonderfully browned finish and scalloped brass mounts. Scabbard body exhibits scattered pitting with light areas of loss and a nice overall remaining finish. Mounts retain generous amounts of original gilding. A very clean example of a Civil War presentation grade sword. CONDITION: Very good.
