High Grade M1850 foot officer's sword by Tiffany & Co. New York. The sword features a bright blade that is mostly unadorned with the exception of stunningly detailed panels on each side. The obverse features a spread-winged eagle with banner in beak, shield protecting its chest, and perched on swirling clouds in front of beaming sun rays contained in a rococo frame. Reverse features the same frame but contains the letters "U.S." with surrounding vines. Marked "TIFFANY & CO / NEW YORK" on obverse and "WARRANTED TO CUT WROUGHT IRON" above ricasso with PD Lunenschloss marking on ricasso. Hilt with guard that features open work foliate scrolls and thick quillon. Tiered pommel with wood grip that is grooved and wrapped with high quality sharkskin. Twisted brass wire is accommodated by the grooves. Complete with scabbard that is also wrapped with high quality sharkskin with gilded brass mounts. Upper mount is marked "16", middle mount is marked "20", and drag is also marked "16". The blade remains bright with crisp detail to blade decorations though maker marks are faint, possibly due to scabbard wear or an older light cleaning. Hilt retains excellent amounts of original gilding with 1 crack in grip down the seam. Scabbard body exhibits light blemishes with mounts that retain nice amounts of original gilding. Soldering around upper mount carry ring. A very nice example of a Tiffany & Co. presentation grade sword. CONDITION: Very good.
