Lot consists of (A) Model 1777 French Corrige An IX marked "Essex Brigade N.J."The French 1777 Corrected Year 9 was the quintessential musket of the Napoleonic war and saw widespread use. This example has the spring-loaded front band and correctly profiled pan cover, but has been scrubbed of all markings, branded with "Essex Brigade / N.J." on left side of comb, under cheek cutout. Front strap replaced with an all brass version of French manufacture. Sling swivels on mid band and front of trigger guard, with a crudely incised "MM" in front of finial, with a more professionally stamped "M.M." behind barrel tang, probably initials. After the War of the Seventh Coalition, a number of these muskets were sold abroad, including to the United States and Mexico; no doubt this example was purchased at that time. CONDITION: Metal is essentially a rich brown patina throughout with some light peppering. Brass is a deep untouched dark golden color. Stock has some minor marks from handling and use, a couple of bug holes on right side of comb, but solid and strong. Brands clear. Mechanically fine, bore good with some areas of oxidation. (B) T. Davidson Kentucky rifle. Full stock percussion Kentucky rifle similar to guns made in Ohio. "T. Davidson & Co Cincinnati" marked lock with lined borders and what appears to be a hunting scene at tail. Double set triggers protected by a brass trigger guard with jaeger-ian swoop at rear. 39" rifled barrel, unsigned, fitted with notch rear sight and German silver blade front sight. Plain full length curly maple stock with brass hardware. CONDITION: Metal is essentially a smooth chocolate patina throughout with some burnout around drum from use. Barrel pins are replaced and have some chipping. Brass has a deep unpolished mustard appearance. Wood is very good with handling marks throughout, crack at sideplanel. Mechanically fine, excepting lock does not always hold on full cock, bore is good.
