26" barrel in .69 caliber, rifled, with front sight integral to front brass double strapped barrel band and home-manufactured notched brass rear sight. Dovetail was cut into the barrel for use with a M1858 rear sight at time of rifling. Full-length button head ramrod not secured by swivel retainer. Marked with VP eagle head proof on left side near breech. Lock is a non-armory replacement, but appears to be period. 1 piece plain walnut stock with military buttplate. Alterations to this musketoon include rifling with 3 groove rifling, installation of dovetail and homemade rear sight, removal of saddle ring bar, and installation of new lock. With the exception of the 3 groove rifling and the dovetail cut for a rear sight, all other alterations do not fit the Federal 1850 Regulations and were done by another party, possibly Confederate. CONDITION: Good, as lightly cleaned with heavy freckling and handling marks throughout, mostly turned a brown patina. Stock has been sanded and refinished with small crack at lock retaining plate. Mechanically fine, with all 3 hammer notches. Bore is dark with visible rifling.
