The South Africa Medal (1880), often referred to as the "Zulu War Medal", is a campaign medal that was awarded to members of the British Army, Royal Naval Brigade, and Colonial Volunteers who participated in a series of South African tribal wars between 1877-1879, most notably for the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879. These medals are generally encountered engraved in upright or sloping serif capitals, although a number of minor style variations are documented. This example is engraved in upright serif capitals "1019 DRUMR. T. CONDON. 57TH FOOT." Condon appears on the rolls with confirmation of the medal. He is also noted to have received the 1879 clasp which is not present on this medal. A total of 18332 1879 clasps were issued with 1034 1879 clasps awarded to the 57th Foot and 141 medals with no clasps awarded to the regiment. The 57th (West Middlesex) Regiment of Foot sailed to South Africa in 1879 for service in the Anglo-Zulu War. CONDITION: The medal exhibits a dark patina with legible engraving.
