Octagonal-to-round barrel with wedding rings at the girdle, brass bead front sight. Hardwood ramrod is retained by 2 ferrules soldered to underside of barrel and feeds into a reinforced mouth. Half stock cut to length, possibly from the original full length stock. Sling loops ahead of reinforced mouth and mounted to a stud at rear of tang. Lock is unmarked but well engraved with incised mythical creatures including a cockatrice on cock and relief carved cherubic faces, with accenting floral scrollwork. Elaborate pierced sideplate with 2 locks and depict what appear to be mermaids with a central vignette portrait. Pierced plaque at wrist with a crown surmounting a vacant vignette with supporting human figures. Buttplate with long heel engraved with a helmeted warrior. Trigger with a formal finial and raised face on guard, long tang with floral finial. Wood with heavily softened relief carving of florals and motifs throughout. CONDITION: Barrel has been heavily cleaned with several period repair of brass braize and copper. Wood has been heavily cleaned and softened carving throughout; some handling marks and some cracks. Mechanically fine, although pan cover is loose, bore is good.
