Manufactured 1919, and shipped to Gough November 6th, 1919, green, with a notation "To be engraved". Coverage is approximately D coverage of Gough's distinct rolling vinework, striated ground, with a floral device on top of slide between muzzle and ejection port, and inscribed "W.F. Sims 1920" in a vignette; a post-it note on back of the factory letter attributes this reference to Lt. W.F. Sims, Fourth Division Chicago, Naval Reserves of Illinois. Other accents include rocker engraving around magazine release, slide release hole, grip safety, and grip straps, and frame. Iconic configuration of the 1911 with half moon front sight, U notch flat top rear sight, 2-line 2-block patent and address information with intercepting Colt pony, right side with "COLT AUTOMATIC / CALIBRE 45"; right side of frame with "GOVERNMENT MODEL" and serial number. "W" subinspector proof on left side of trigger guard. Barrel has "PX-4" heat lot and "S P" on left lug, indicating it is a Springfield replacement. Truncated diamond walnut grips. PROVENANCE: From the advanced collection of the esteemed and respected Dr. Jim Watson of Scottsdale, Arizona. CONDITION: Metal retains approximately 30-40% of the bluing, mostly in protected areas on frame. Balance of metal is dove grey mixed with some chocolate spotting. Engraving is still well defined and masterfully cut, as befits a master like Gough. Walnut grips very good, more recent vintage. A very attractive gun engraved by one of Colt's master engravers, and letters as such.
