Manufactured 1869 per serial number. Iconic configuration of the 1860 Army with German silver blade front sight, 8" round barrel, Naval engagement scene, silver plate brass front strap, and checkered ivory grips. There is an "E" on frame, trigger guard, and butt; this mark was used to indicate Colt engraving. Matching full or partial serial numbers observed on barrel assembly frame, trigger guard, butt, cylinder, and cylinder arbor. Checkered ivory grips are marked "382" on interior. 3 screw frame, no stock cutouts. Revolver is engraved with excellent, deeply cut flowing scrollwork with punch dot background and hatch shading, approximately 50% coverage, including a device with starbursts and florals on top of barrel, and wolf's head hammer. Rammer assembly and straps are engraved en suite. Housed in a wooden case with ochre lining and containing an Eley cap tin, 2 cavity brass bullet mold with sprue cutter, and an embossed powder flask with "1847" incised on bottom. PROVENANCE: From the advanced collection of the esteemed and respected Dr. Jim Watson of Scottsdale, Arizona. CONDITION: Metal is largely dove grey with scattered mossing and patina. Barrel assembly has approximately 20-25% bluing on underside of barrel where protected by rammer and on flute. Cylinder has traces in protected area and behind, approximately 10-15%, with a good cylinder scene. Trigger guard with approximately 10% silver plate, mostly around trigger guard, with balance of brass a bright gold hue. Grips are good with good grain but are period fit to the gun. Mechanically fine, bore is good with strong rifling. Case is very good with some handling marks and rubs. Accessories very good. A very presentable example.
