Manufactured in 1874 and shipped in lot 6 to the Springfield Armory February 17, 1874. Some guns from this lot were issued to the 7th Cavalry for companies D and I. In the book "Colt Cavalry and Artillery Revolvers: A Continuing Study" by Kopec and Fenn, the authors state that there were approximately 300 Colt revolvers lost by the troopers and recovered by the Indians at the Battle of the Little Big Horn in 1876. Single line script barrel address, "+COLT'S PT. F. A. CO. HARTFORD, CT. U.S.A.+". Two line patent dates and small U.S. on the left side of the frame. Matching serial numbers on the barrel, frame, trigger guard, back strap and cylinder. There is an A on the barrel, trigger guard, cylinder, and backstrap: this is the sub-inspector O.W. Ainsworth's inspector mark. Matching assembly numbers, 921, on the bottom of the frame and loading gate. First style of ejector rod housing with a bullseye ejector rod. Grip has been sanded down and had some geometric designs carved on both sides. The cartouche has been removed from the grip. This gun looks like it has some newer springs and possibly a replacement trigger. PROVENANCE: From the advanced collection of the esteemed and respected Dr. Jim Watson of Scottsdale, Arizona. CONDITION: Gun is gunmetal gray with brown patina. Scattered dings and dens across the entire gun. Grip shows wear and has some chips at the toes and heel. Bore is dark with frosting and some light pitting in the lands and grooves. The action has all 4 clicks and works well. Here is a chance to own a historically important Custer range gun.
