Manufactured 1912 per serial number. Half moon front sight and early rounded top U notch rear sight. Left side of slide with 2 line 2 block patent and address information (last patent date February 14th, 1911) in serif font, with encircled Rampant Colt at rear. Right side of slide with "MODEL OF 1911. U.S. ARMY" in serif font. Serial number on right side of dust cover, as befits an early model, left side with US Property mark. Frame with intertwined WGP for Walter Penfield. Barrel mark heavily faded on hood but looks to be the intertwined HP; "G" in front of lug. Small parts comprise checkered spurred hammer, checkered thin tab safety with relief mill, checkered slide release with relieved area, smooth milled trigger, checkered magazine release, short grip safety, smooth flat mainspring housing with lanyard loop, and truncated diamond walnut grips. Scarce 2 tone keyhole magazine. PROVENANCE: From the advanced collection of the esteemed and respected Dr. Jim Watson of Scottsdale, Arizona. CONDITION: Metal retains slightly less than half, approximately 40%, with losses to high edges and high traffic areas. Silvering consistent with holster wear and to high edges. Markings are crisp and appropriate burnishing is visible from application of stamps. Grip straps essential dove grey, back strap with some chocolate patina mixed in. Mechanically fine, bore has good visible rifling, mild frosting, and some minor pits.
