Lot consists of 3 items, all from the Dr. John K. Lattimer collection. (A) 1837 filing in the Sangamon Circuit Court for an issue of process on behalf William Hickman as executor of a will against Isaac Brancher for “trespass upon the case upon promises.” Signed by Lincoln in the name of the firm “Stuart & Lincoln for plff. [plaintiff]”. John Todd Stuart had been admitted to the bar in 1828, met Lincoln in 1832, and encouraged him to study law, the two becoming partners 1837-1841. Stuart was a cousin of Mary Todd Lincoln and served in the US House of Representatives 1863-1865, where he voted against the 13th Amendment before leaving office. CONDITION: Very good. Paper framed. With JSA letter of authenticity. (B) Black Lincoln mourning cords or drapery ties with false-knot ends of black thread and cord over a wood form along with a gold tassle purportedly from the Lincoln funeral car, also with wood core. CONDITION: Very good, but black mourning cord with 1 end detached. (C) November 1841 appearance bond filed in Coles County Circuit Court on behalf of Ann Mullen to face a charge of petit larceny, signed by Dennis Hanks as one of the guarantors. The Hanks family was entwined with the Lincolns: Dennis Friend Hanks was the illegitimate son of an aunt of Lincoln’s mother; the two young men were friends in southern Indiana; Hanks moved in with the Thomas Lincoln family after the death of his own guardians and Abraham Lincoln’s mother; in 1821 he married Abraham Lincoln’s stepsister, Elizabeth Johnston. Hanks and wife moved to Illinois with the Lincolns in 1830 and maintained connections, their daughter later boarding with Abraham and Mary Lincoln in Springfield while in school and Lincoln representing Hanks in an 1851 lawsuit. CONDITION: Excellent. Minor foxing left edge and right fold.
