Third model 1851 Navy manufactured in 1856 to fulfill a U.S. Army contract. These "Army" Navies are found in the 42,000 to 80,000 serial number range with 20,000 purchased. Many were issued to the 1st and 2nd Cavalry, seeing hard use in the West, as well as to state militias and further service in the Civil War. This standard example is fitted with a 7 - 1/2" octagon barrel, cone front sight, hammer notch rear, and 6-shot .36 caliber percussion cylinder. Frame is correctly stamped "U.S." on the left under the 2-line patent date. Standard brass grip straps. 1-piece smooth walnut grips are impressed on the left with a very scarce script "LCA" inspector cartouche for Lucius Allin, and an illegible cartoucheon the right. PROVENANCE: From the personal and advanced collection of Dr. Jim Watson of Scottsdale, Arizona. CONDITION: Good. Steel components retain traces of original finish in protected areas, overall exhibiting a brown gray patina. Cylinder scene remains largely visible, as are other markings. Grip straps have turned an even mellow patina. Grips appear lightly cleaned with some minor impressions and moderate wear. Bore is strong with some light black powder abrasion towards the muzzle. Matching full or partial numbers observed on frame, grip straps, arbor, cylinder, barrel, and loading lever. Wedge is a replacement. Hammer also appears to have been replaced.
