This knife has an 8" clip-point blade with 3 - 1/2" false edge. The left side is "THE HUNTER'S COMPANION" along the top of the blade, along with a stamped eagle with a banner that reads "BEST QUALITY". The ricasso is stamped "MOTTRAM / TAYLOR & Co. / SHEFFIELD". The ovoid-shaped guard is made of German silver. The ivory grip scales are laid on brass backplates with roped edges. The left side features a German silver escutcheon without inscription. Grip scales are retained by 4 silver pins on each side. Complete with its original leather sheath with German silver throat mount and a replaced mount at the tip. Brown leather Wirth gilt pressed borders. PROVENANCE: From the personal and advanced collection of Dr. Jim Watson of Scottsdale, Arizona. CONDITION: Blade has been heavily cleaned, some areas of deep pitting, the name "MOTTRAM" partially obscured by pitting. Grips retain a pleasing honey patina. Sheath shows large areas of losses to surface of leather, tip replaced. A very attractive ivory-handled Sheffield Bowie knife.
