For an identical example, see plate 93.A on page 275 of "Swords & Blades of the American Revolution" by George C. Neumann. The example in the book was recovered in the gunboat "Philadelphia", which was sunk during the Battle of Valcour Island in 1776. Neumann denotes that it has pointed to ears, as this example also has. The measurements of the width (4 - 1/2") are identical and height is similar: this example is 6 - 1/2" and the example in the book is 7 - 1/2". This is partially due to the heavy use that this example has seen on the square poll end. The right side is deeply stamped with a broad arrow about 2 - 1/2" above the point on the pole ear. CONDITION: Brown patina with some damage to square poll and some delamination. A very nice Revolutionary War axe.
