The French M1854 sword is one of the most attractive French regulation swords produced for the French navy. The gilded brass half-basket guard is decorated with ivy leaves surrounding a fouled anchor, and the quillon is in the form of a serpent. The single-edged blade is similar to the M1845 infantry officer's sword, with a thin, continuous fuller that runs along the spine. A second wide fuller runs below the first, with the blade terminating in a spear point. The spine is engraved "Coulaux Klingenthal". Ricasso appears to have proofs that are hidden by the leather washer. Hilt exhibits a pleasant patina with nice original gilding with scallop shell decorated backstrap exhibiting little wear. Pommel and peened tang are good with nice patina. Blade is bright and exhibits scattered light blemishes. Complete with leather scabbard that exhibits light surface cracking and creases. Brass mounts are gilded with nice amounts of original finish that are complimented by a pleasing patina. Anchor decoration on the upper mount with shell stud. A splendid example of a French sword. CONDITION: Very good.
