Excellent Union cavalry private’s uniform jacket, worn also by NCOs with appropriate chevrons. Adopted in 1855, regulation for all U.S. cavalry regiments, regular and volunteer, during the Civil War. Strong color to dark blue wool body and yellow cavalry piping, which is regulation and complete, around the collar and false buttonholes, down the front, around the waist, on the rear bolsters intended to support the saber belt, in arcs on each side of the back and forming a chevron on each cuff. All 20 regulation small general-service eagle buttons in place: 12 on the front, 2 on each cuff, and 2 on each side of the collar. Loose-weave brownish gray wool lining in place, with single pocket in left breast. Off-white sleeve linings show blurred inspection stamp in right sleeve and USQMD stamp in left. 2 short tears to lining at left armpit, one short seam separation. Edges of sleeve linings restitched at armpits. Hook and eye in place at bottom collar edge. Short seam separation interior collar at center. Buttonholes very good. Some buttons possibly resewn, but mostly tight. Cavalry jackets have strong visual appeal and no branch of service had more romance associated with it. This is a top-notch example that would be the centerpiece of a cavalry display. CONDITION: Excellent.
