Lot consists of material related to John Paul Jones, ex. Lattimer collection. (A) December 1779 New Jersey Gazette with news from London of Jones’s taking of the Serapis but escape of the Baltic fleet and worries that Jones might retaliate for British burning of coastal towns. (B) Feb. 1780 New Jersey Gazette reporting account of Flamborough Head by Thomas Berry a captured British privateersman serving on the Bonhomme Richard, who escaped in the battle. (C) Partly printed French pay voucher dated 1780 at L’Orient for widow of crewman on the Bonhomme Richard. (D) Partly printed French pay voucher dated 1780 at L’Orient for widow of crewman on the Vengeance (E) Gentleman’s Magazine Sept. 1779, contemporary references to Jones, the war in America, etc. (F) November 1787 New Haven Gazette reporting Jones’s denial that Landais had spit in his face and Landais’s assertion that he had done so. (G) Engraving Jones Capturing Serapis, Johnson & Fry 1858. (H) Engraving Jones with sword and pistols in sash, Esnautes et Rapilly, rue. Ste. Jacques. (I) Manuscript (12pp.) and typescript (22 pp.) copies of “Paul Jones a Paris,” by J.B. Gustave Bord.” Probably about 1900. (J) 1906 report in French by the commission of old Paris on communications relative to the discovery and identification of Jones's remains. Map of the search area, photos of searchers, Jones’s corpse, comparison with bust by Houdon, autopsy report, etc. (K) 1906 Naval Academy program for Commemoration of John Paul Jones. (L) Prisoners of 1776: A Relic of the Revolution, Livesey 1854, contains an account of voyages of Jones. (M) Life and Correspondence of John Paul Jones, Taylor 1830, 555 pages, rebound. (N) Copy American Heritage Naval Battles and Heroes 1960. CONDITION: All very good to excellent. The pay vouchers mention Jones at the top and are extremely scarce. The Jones-Landais feud, of course, dated back to the Battle Off Flamborough Head at least. Ex-Lattimer Collection.
