Lot consists of: (A) December 1799 ALS by Hugh Percy, 2nd Duke of Northumberland, signed “Northumberland,” returning a check and asking the addressee to properly endorse and return it. Percy (1742-1817) fought in the Seven Years War and was Colonel of the 5th Regiment of Foot, and acting as a brigadier general with the British forces at Boston in 1775. He led the relief force that rescued demoralized British troops in their retreat from Lexington and Concord. He missed Bunker Hill, was at Long Island and Fort Washington, reached the rank of lieutenant general, but resigned and returned to England in 1777. CONDITION: Excellent. (B) Undated ALS of James Clinton revising boundaries of lots in Montgomery, Ulster County, New York, with reference to surveys of 1712 and one of his own in 1798. CONDITION: Very Good. (C) 10 Sept. 1795 ALS of James Clinton, an affecting letter from Little Britain notifying the recipient that Mrs. Clinton has remitting fever and “is very weak so that I have no home of her recovery.” He fears a letter sent to her brother, Dr. Dewitt, has not reached him or that he thinks she not as bad as she is, and asks him to go immediately to Dr. Dewitt and deliver this letter. Clinton (1736-1812) was brother and father of Governors of New York. He was an officer in the New York Provincials in the French and Indian War, and reached the rank of colonel and brigadier general in the Revolutionary War. He was wounded in the fighting for Forts Clinton and Montgomery in 1777, and commanded one of the contingents in the Sullivan-Clinton campaign of 1779. He served in the New York legislature and senate after the war. Mrs. Clinton died Sept. 12, 1795, just two days after this letter. CONDITION: Good. Repaired tears and tape stains. Ex-Lattimer Collection and each is accompanied by a James Spence Authentication Full Letter of Authenticity.
