Hand Book of Surgical Operations by Stephen Smith. Printed in 1862, the surgical manual was one of the go-to texts issued to the Union Army during the Civil War and was authorized by the Surgeon General for issuance to be utilized in hospitals. The book outlines surgical procedures and is heavily illustrated with surgical tools and procedures. The book is signed on the first 2 pages by Orasmus Smith and dated 1862. After serving as a contract surgeon in army hospitals during the 1862 Peninsula Campaign, when he acquired this book, Orasmus Smith (1836-1876) served as Assistant Surgeon and Surgeon in regiments of the Army of the Potomac, all known for hard fighting and exotic uniforms: 10th New York (National Zouaves) 8/15/62-5/7/63, during which time they took 182 casualties at Second Bull Run and Fredericksburg; 84th New York (14th Brooklyn Chasseurs) 4/23/64-6/6/64, 123 casualties at Wilderness and Spottsylvania; 5th New York Veteran Vols. (reorganized Duryea Zouaves) 6/6/64-8/15/65,) 364 casualties at Cold Harbor, Petersburg, Weldon Railroad, and Appomattox Campaign. Smith served after the war in the Medical Department and U.S. Marine Hospital Service at New Orleans, Louisville, Mobile and Galveston, during which time he authored reports on Cholera and Yellow Fever, which he survived himself, and treated a cavalryman in Texas for a gunshot wound in 1870. This text was once in the renowned collection of Dr. John K. Lattimer who was known to collect medical texts. CONDITION: Some separation at the spine but the book is intact. Pages have yellowed with obvious edge wear. Appears complete with all pages. Good.
