Lot consists of 6 receipts for supplies received at Kingsbridge in September and October 1776, and 8 18th century playing cards. 5 receipts are signed by clerks on behalf of Commissary General Joseph Trumbull and specifically refer to the supplies as “for use of the troops of the United States of America,” something with great resonance given the recent signing of the Declaration of Independence. Located at the crossing of Spuyten Duyvil Creek by the Post Road, Kingsbridge separated Manhattan from the Bronx and was strategically important in holding back the British after the Battle of Long Island in August. Washington’s efforts to contain the British would fail in October and November, leading to his retreat through New Jersey. (A) Sept. 23 for 10 barrels of flour. (B) Sept. 24 for 13 barrels of pork from 2 different suppliers. (C) Sept. 24 for 24 barrels of pork from 3 suppliers. (D) Sept. 25 for 8 barrels of pork and 10 of flour. (E) Oct. 5 for 18 barrels of flour. (F) Oct. 14 for 8 barrels of flour (omits the United States reference.) CONDITION: All very good. (G) 8 playing cards, likely French, last quarter 18th century, heavy cardstock about 2 - 1/4" by 3 - 1/4" inches each, 2 of each suit. Printing and writing on some backs indicates they were made from something else. CONDITION: All very good. No face cards. PROVENANCE: Ex-Lattimer Collection.
