Ethan Allen May 1773 signed document selling 17 acres of woodland in Cornwall, Connecticut, inherited from his father, Joseph Allen, to Samuel Whitmore of Salisbury, Litchfield County, Connecticut. Ethan Allen (1738-1789) was born in Litchfield, but is most closely associated with the founding of Vermont and best known for his leadership of the Green Mountain Boys and Revolutionary War capture of Fort Ticonderoga. He was captured during the invasion of Quebec in 1775, exchanged in 1778, and given a brevet to Colonel, but did not see field service thereafter. He was heavily involved in the New Hampshire land grants of the 1760s and struggles with New York over the territory lasting into its time as an independent republic starting in 1777 until its statehood in 1791. Interestingly, for the purposes of the transaction Allen lists himself as “of Poultney in Charlotte County and Province of New York.” The town, of course, became part of Vermont and counted Allen’s cousin Ebenezer Allen as one of its founders. CONDITION: Good. Large water stain. Minor edge losses. Ex-Lattimer collection, and comes with a James Spence Authentication Full Letter of Authenticity.
