Fascinating souvenir display of the Battle of Santiago de Cuba consisting of a folio board that contains flag fragments from the famous naval engagement that took place on July 3, 1898. The first row features fragments of an American flag with its 3 signature colors of red, white, and blue bunting, all of which are tarnished from the actions of that day. The red and white fragments appear to be from the striped field and are sewn together, while the blue fragment from the canton is pasted underneath. There are 2 smaller fragments stacked on top of each other that are of red and gold bunting, which are from a captured Spanish flag. The folio is ornately hand captioned and lettered "Pieces of the Battle Flags / of / U.S. Flagship Brooklyn / Commodore W. S. Schley, U.S.N. / and / Spanish Flagship Infanta Maria Teresa / Admiral Cervera / Borned by them during the Battle off / Santiago de Cuba / July 3, 1898. / Presented to the Hamilton Club / by / Lieutenant J.G. Doyle, U.S.N. / U.S.S. Brooklyn." Infanta Maria Teresa was the lead ship of her class and flagship of Spanish Vice Admiral Pascual Cervera y Topete, commander of the Spanish Navy's 1st Squadron. She was engaged by the USS Iowa, USS Texas, and USS Brooklyn and heavily damaged during the Battle of Santiago de Cuba where she was deliberately beached by Admiral Cervera in order to save the remainder of her crew. The board is dampstained and foxed but presents extremely well and contains rare pieces of Spanish American War history. This historic display is former Dr. John K. Lattimer Collection. CONDITION: Good.
