Lot consists of 2 items related to Lexington and Concord figures. (A) Document torn on left edge dated May 2, 1776, regarding distribution to “several widows & wounded persons” of “ten shillings and four pence” from a fund of 100 pounds sterling donated by “persons in England.” This specifically mentions the “Lexington Battle” and refers at the bottom to a “Widow Webb.” Signed by Dr. Samuel Holten (1738-1816,) who was on the Massachussets Committee of Safety, member of the Mass Provincial Congress, an officer in the militia, etc. CONDITION: Very legible. The gist is clear, but torn left edge has eliminated some words. (B) 1814 signed appointment of Ebenezer Brooks as Justice of the Peace in Barnstable, signed at upper left by Governor John Brooks. As Major in the Reading Militia in 1775 John Brooks (1752-1825) was active in the fighting during the return march of British troops from Concord on April 19. He later served in the siege of Boston, Battles of White Plains, Saratoga, and Monmouth. He helped diffuse the Newburgh conspiracy and was an original member of the Society of the Cincinnati in Massachusetts. CONDITION: Good. Losses and upper and lower left center edges. Partial separation lines. PROVENANCE: Ex-Lattimer collection.
