Lot consists of: (A) Henry Morton Stanley ALS on Whitehall stationary, 3 pages, 8vo, London December 1, 1902. To Majorie Finlay "Some wicked servant shoved your dear little letter out of sight and after much trouble I found it had dropped snugly behind the books on my writing table...with regard to your request about some 'curious' [sic] I send you a varied collection of stamps which knowing young people [are] fond of collecting...Aunty Dolly sends her ever sincere love to your mother..." A very lengthy, chatty letter, signed "Henry M. Stanley" with holograph envelope. Ink remains bold with legible writing. Minimal stains. CONDITION: Good. (B) David Livingstone ALS, 3 pages, 8vo, Birkenhead, March 6, 1858. "As I am not very well from some of the effects of old African fevers I am obliged to decline...I did not know when you called that I had the honour to be introduced to a relative of Mrs. Duncan whose books I have read with much interest..." After recently returning from Zambesi, Livingstone was hailed and courted as a hero. Unfortunately, he declined many invitations because of "African fevers". Bold ink with legible writing. Traces of mounting on verso of final page. CONDITION: Good. Both letters are Ex-Lattimer Collection and each is accompanied by James Spence Authentication Full Letters of Authenticity.
