Per the included factory letter, this pistol shipped green on November 2nd, 1918, to W.H. Gough for factory engraving, and was subsequently returned and shipped to Murta Appleton Company on January 10th, 1919. Stocks were unlisted, which typically indicates the factory standard of hard rubber, and three total guns were in the shipment. Engraved in Gough's trademark ropey florals on a striated background. Unusual engraved star on the back of the frame above the grip safety. Typical blued and case color configuration, fit with mother of pearl grips with deep-set Colt medallions, forward facing. In a Colt fliptop maroon box for a Colt Vest Pocket, numbered to a different gun. PROVENANCE: From the personal and advanced collection of Dr. Jim Watson of Scottsdale, Arizona. CONDITION: Slide and frame have blue only in protected areas, such as under the rail and in sighting notch, with some scattered mossing and other flashes of blue throughout. Engraving is well defined, somewhat softened by the mossing and age. Grips have some handling marks and micropockets on right side. Case colors muted but present. Mechanically fine, bore has soft visible rifling and heavy frosting throughout. Box has multiple tape repairs, sections of aprons missing, and significant rubbing.
