A cast iron C&O Railway "surf board"-style "2770" in yellow-painted lettering with a yellow border on a black-painted field. Paint may be original. The back of the plate shows old, flat black paint, and there are four bosses for mounting to smokebox door. This particular locomotive was one of the very last to operate on the C&O and was stored for many years after the end of steam in Russell, KY. It was slated to be preserved but was accidentally scrapped. The builder's plate for this locomotive is offered elsewhere in this sale.
