As per the letter from Atkin Grant & Lang, this shotgun was delivered July 24th, 1879, and was made for a Mr. W. Craven as an Anson & Deely action, 20 bore, with 30" Damascus barrels. Dovetail lump barrels are chain Damascus with a steel bead front sight on a sunken rib, with barrels engraved with Stephen Grant & Sons' Bury Street addressed, dressed at the breeches with light engraving. Bottom of barrels with matching serial number and "HW" for barrel maker. Modern nitro proofs for 2 - 3/4" 20 gauge, with nominal IBD of 15.9 in both barrels. Extractor. Splinter forearm is retained by a single key through that feeds through an escutcheon. External metal is engraved in English style acanthus scroll and florals; a small piece of ivory has been roughly inset into the point pattern checkering. Sidepanels at rear of forearm. Interior of iron is serial number matching to the gun. Water table with serial number, A&D patent, and view and proof marks. Boxlock action with English-style acanthus scroll and strapwork about the edges, nicely shaped clamshell fences, and "SAFE" inlaid in gold ahead of safety slide. Trigger guard with forward articulating lever for breaking the gun open protects double triggers, is engraved en suite, and has the serial number. Silver plaque at toe line with a heraldric crest, worn, but it appears to be a bird standing on a crown with an illegible motto surrounding. Stock of a nicely figured dense wood with sidepanels, tear drops, point pattern checkering about the wrist, and a leather-wrapped recoil pad with leather-covered screws and a section of skate tape for added traction. Cast off for a right-handed shooter. Housed in a leather-wrapped brass tabbed case with red lining. Lid has Grant trade label and 2 charge cards while bottom is compartmentalized for gun and accessories comprising 4 snap caps, an ebony decocking block, a Briley barrel slip, a 2 piece wiping/cleaning rod, and wallets with cleaning tools. Lid is embossed "BRYDGES WILLYAMS / CARNATION / CORNWALL" with a Great Western Railway sticker. CONDITION: Barrels retain much of their browning with visible Damascus pattern, some thinning to silver throughout, and a few scratches to silver. Stocks are very good with a layer of varnish added that has softened some of the sharp edges, some scattered handling marks from the field throughout. Some crazing to leather. Mechanically fine, bores are excellent, bright and shiny. Case is very good with some age related distress throughout including some scrapes through the leather to wood. Lining has faded and has some rubs, compartment for stock and receiver has a broken partition.
