Circa 1875. Round chain Damascus barrel with steel bead foresight, and partially faceted at the breech, with Grant's St. James street address on top flat, accompanied by a light sprig of engraving. Underside of barrels with modern Nitro proof for 12 gauge, 2 -3/4" chambers, and nominal IBD of 18.7; "JI" in front of forearm lug for barrel maker. Extractor. Friction fit forearm with point pattern checkering and forearm tip with lip. Exterior iron lightly engraved in geometrics. Rounded receiver with non-rebounding serpentine hammer with tall cock, checkered sidelever, and back action peninsula lock engraved with pheasants in a field and a bold "STEPHEN GRANT". Balance of engraving is English style acanthus scroll with wrigglework and strapwork about the perimeter; hinge pin with a shell motif. Trigger guard with long tang is lightly engraved en suite, protects a single trigger, and has serial number. English style straight grip stick checkered in point pattern about the wrist and terminates in a pigskin-wrapped recoil pad with leather-covered screws. In a leather wrapped case with a Grant trade label in lid and a charge card. Compartmentalized for the gun and accessories comprising a square oil bottle. CONDITION: Barrels with a nice rebrown, probably done at time of reproof, with some little pockmarks still visible under the brown. Engraving somewhat softened by refinish. Stocks are very good with handling marks throughout and also refreshed, probably when the barrels were redone. Walnut forearm a replacement. Receiver and lock are good essentially gunmetal grey, with some mild staining. Mechanically fine, bore is very good with a few scattered pits, mostly ahead of forcing cones.
