Gewehr 98 manufactured at the Amberg Arsenal in 1917. Rust blued barrel chambered in 8mm with "S" stamp indicating conversion for spitzer ammunition. Standard blade front sight and rollercoaster rear. Receiver correctly remains in the white and is marked "AMBERG / 1917" under an imperial crown with correct Imperial and Amberg proofs. 2-piece finger groove stock walnut stock bearing several Imperial proofs. Blued steel mounts with an unmarked period leather sling. CONDITION: Very good. Rifle retains the vast majority of its original arsenal blue with some light wear and a few minor cleaned oxidation spots. In the white components remain bright with some patina spots. Stock has a duffle cut between the barrel bands and some scattered impressions, otherwise wood remains very good with strong, legible markings. Especially fine, bright bore with strong well defined rifling. Fine mechanics. Matching full or partial serial numbers observed throughout, excluding the forward band which appears to be a correct replacement. Sling is still strong and largely supple. A very nice example of a World War I Gewehr 98.
