A Bavarian court sword from the period of Maximilian II, King of Bavaria (1848 - 1864). The sword is quite elegant and features a gilded hilt with lion head pommel, mother of pearl grip scales with a gilt plaque bearing the cipher of Maximilian, and a clamshell-shaped guard depicting a lion. Straight diamond-cut blade decorated with chiseling, gilt, contained in attractive blued panels. Alternating etched panels with patriotic and foliate motifs, first panel on obverse features a banner with "In Treue fest", which was the motto of the Kingdom of Bavaria and of its Wittelsbach rulers. Ricasso bears the mark of 2 squirrels denoting Carl Eickhorn. Stitched leather scabbard with gilt brass mounts and decorated spade stud. The blade is bright with mostly unmolested decorations and motifs. Generous amounts of gilding to the hilt. Small chips to left grip; scabbard body is firm with a few scuffs, mounts with mellow patina. CONDITION: Very good.
