Lot consists of: (A) Nice example of a Civil War Era M1840 presentation grade officer's saber. These swords are an especially scarce model considering the regulations of 1851 called for artillery officers to carry the M1850 Staff and Field Officer's Sword. The saber features a curved blade with single deep fuller and is decorated with patriotic and floral motifs for half its length. Maker marked "WH HORSTMANN / & SONS / PHILADELPHIA" just above the ricasso. An etched foliate vine mirrors the blade decorations on the spine. 1 piece hilt constructed of cast brass with center swelled leather wrapped grip. Twisted brass wire is accommodated by the grooves. Flower quillon with domed pommel. Complete with its metal scabbard, which is wrapped with leather, and features brass mounts. The blade exhibits a gray patina with crisp decorations. Scattered blemishes with areas of freckling. Hilt also exhibits a nice patina with scattered spotting. Intact grip with handling wear. Scabbard exhibits scattered scuffs to body with a pleasing patina to mounts. CONDITION: Good. (B) Civil War M1840 light artillery saber, termed Type 1, with recessed counterguard. Standard configuration with ricasso marked "AMES MFG. CO. / CABOTVILLE / 1849" (first line is very faint) and "US / WP". Blade remains bright with scattered areas of spotting. Hilt with mellow patina, intact grip, and tight wire. Handling wear evident on grip. Complete with iron scabbard with 2 carry rings that features a light brown patina. CONDITION: Good.
