The horn measures about 14 - 1/2" across the bow. Renowned collector Walter O'Connor knew of 19 powder horns by this engraver and coined the term "The Master Carver" due to skill and his detailed depictions of forts and Native Americans. The tapered spout section features a relief ring at the opening and another 1 - 3/4" down. The main body has a scalloped edge. The horn is profusely engraved with forts, waterways, ships, buildings and Native Americans. Some of the main important and unusual depictions include Presque Isle in Erie, Pennsylania; Lake Erie; Fort Detroit, Quebec and "Fall of Niagara". There are detailed depictions of Native Americans with war clubs and one carrying three scalps. The horn has a brass cap at the butt in the English fashion. There is a period brass chain attached below the spout with a touch hole pick. There is also a brass loop for strap attachment and a corresponding loop on the center of the brass buttcap. CONDITION: Horn is as found and untouched, retaining a pleasing honey patina. One hard-to-see small crack below the Indian carrying scalps. Butt cap retains a very dark heavy brown patina, the band slightly bent. A very desirable horn by a rarely found engraver.
