Circa 1876. 32" dovetail lump chain Damascus barrels with diminutive bead front sight on a solid, tapering, rib, engraved "J.PURDEY 614 1/2 OXFORD STREET LONDON" address. Barrel flats with London view and proof marks for a 10 gauge shotgun, marked "NOT FOR BALL" with EM proof and "JP" at lump. Doll's head rib extension with third bite. Splinter forearm with Anson style plunger release, point pattern checkering, and smooth exterior iron. Interior iron with matching serial number. Action flats with view proof. Unadorned case-colored bar-in-wood action with simple "Purdey" on either lockplate. Nicely filed fences, tall serpentine rebounding hammers, and top lever with "PATENT". Double triggers are protected by a plain trigger guard with long tang. English style straight rip stock with flat top checkering about the wrist and teardrops behind the action. Vacant silver oval at toe line. Plain steel buttplate. CONDITION: Good. Barrels with good definition to Damascus pattern, largely silvered out, with some browning retained, primarily towards breeches. Stocks are very good, smoothed by use, with handling marks and evidence of field use throughout, but free of cracks for chips. Action is very good with case coloring in protected areas, perhaps 5-10%, balance gunmetal grey with some areas of staining. Mechanically fine, barrels are tight on face, bores have areas of pitting throughout. An excellent candidate for restoration.
