Made by E. Remington and Sons circa 1865. 8" octagonal blued barrel with E. Remington and Sons address and patents information, and silver cone sight. Matching serial numbers on cylinder, barrel, and frame. Blued frame with government single letter inspection marks, brass trigger guard, and factory 2-piece walnut grips with government inspector marks. Comes in period black leather flap holster. Consignor attributes this revolver to his great-grandfather, Reuben Loverin, who is reported as enlisting in the 1st Rhode Island Cavalry at the start of the Civil War before transferring to the New Hampshire Cavalry. It is believed he acquired this Remington after loosing his Colt at Chickamanga. After the war, Loverin returned to New England and became a prolific bridge builder, some of his stone bridges still standing today. The consignor's letter also notes that this pistol was given to respected collector Norm Flayderman by his grandfather, Harold Loverin, and retuned to the family after Flayderman's death. This letter, as well as a copy of a period photo of Loverin in uniform double armed with sword and Colt revolver, are included with this lot. CONDITION: Overall good, with metal fading to a silvery brown patina. Grips have traces of varnish with visible but worn inspector marks. Brass has turned to a dark yellow color. Dark pitted bore with good mechanics. Holster has usage wear with good stitching, cap missing off pocket, and leather starting to crumble on flap.
