Flintlock New England Style rifle attributed to Welcome Mathewson of Rhode Island circa 1796 to 1830. 56 - 1/2" overall with 41" round smoothbore barrel with muzzle groove cut, giving the appearance of rifling, flat sight plane, and brass blade front sight. English-style flintlock reconverted to flint with decorated single trigger control. French-style architecture cherry stock of an attractive flame figure with engraved brass hardware, including a pineapple-type finial trigger guard, pointed engraved sideplate with New England-style wire wrist inlay work, and silver engraved thumbpiece. Comes with a period hardwood ramrod. PROVENANCE: Dr. Douglas Sirkin collection. CONDITION: Overall good. Metal has some freckling, turning to a dark brown patina. The brass has been polished and is starting to return to a golden-yellow color. The lock fits the mortise well and appears original with period-looking conversion parts. The stock has been lightly cleaned with no visible restoration, with some small slivers missing near the muzzle. Dark pitted bore with functioning mechanics.
