Carl Moon (1879-1948), a contemporary of Edward Curtis, moved to the American Southwest in 1903 to capture Native American culture and the West through painting and photography. Circa 1905-1910, this powerful orotone photographic print on glass captures a sorrowful Navajo boy staring intently at the viewer. Singed "C. Moon" in gold script at the lower left. Image is presented in what appears to be the original, ornately molded gilt gesso frame. Raised gilt letter "CARL MOON / 565 N. Mentor Av / Pasadena, Cal." studio label is retained on backing. View approximately 7 - 3/8" x 9 - 3/8", Overall 13 - 1/8" x 15 - 1/4". CONDITION: Very good overall. Image is clean and sharp, as is the signature. Frame has an attractive aged appearance with scattered handling marks and some wear to the gilt. An outstanding, well-presenting Western image. PROVENANCE: Richard "Dick" Burdick collection.
