The factory letter states this gun shipped on September 6, 1886 in .38 caliber with a 3 - 1/2" barrel, nickel finish, pearl grips, factory engraving, and was sent to Henry Kruger, address not listed, in a one gun shipment. This sheriff model is finished, as stated, in nickel with fire blue screws, cylinder pin head, trigger, and top/back of hammer. The left side of the barrel has acid etched panel that reads "COLT DA 38". The top of the barrel has the two line Colt address. The left side of frame has the three line patent date. The left rear trigger bow is stamped "38 CAL". Matching serial numbers on frame, trigger guard, and back strap. Loading gate has assembly number 397. The mother of pearl grips are two piece. This gun has the spring screw on forward strap. This fine revolver features nearly full coverage engraving from either Cuno Helfricht or his shop. General coverage is done in American bank note scroll with punchdot back ground. The back strap exhibits the fish style design found on numerous guns from this shop. The top of the back strap has a crossed geometric design. Nice border engraving around all the factory legends. The cylinder flats have the sunburst motif. CONDITION. Excellent. This gun retains at least 97% of the original factory finish. The engraving is still crisp. There is a bit of brown freckling on straps where they fit the pearl grips. There is a small blending flake at muzzle and a few light age freckles on barrel. The cylinder has a few light age freckles in the flutes. There is some light face burn and on right side of frame at cone, there is some light flaking that is dull grey. The screws are true and retain the majority of blue. The top of the hammer is starting to thin and the back is still brilliant. The trigger is still bright blue, thinning a bit on face. The grips are excellent, toning at edges from metal. The action works both single and double. The bore is strong but does have some minor abrasion. Nice high condition factory engraved Colt.
