Factory letter states that this revolver was shipped on April 30, 1880 as a .38 Colt with a 2 - 1/2" barrel, nickel finish, and rubber grips to Hartley and Graham, New York, in a shipment of 15 guns. In addition to Colt list, this gun was finished with fire blue screws, trigger, cylinder pin, and top and back of the hammer, which has polished sides. Grips are standard Colt gutta percha. Iconic on the sheriff's models, there is no ejector rod. Has matching numbers on frame, trigger guard, and backstrap. Grips are not numbered. Left side of barrel has the acid etched legend "COLT D A 38". Top of barrel has small two line Colt address. Left side of barrel has three line patent dates. CONDITION: Excellent. Overall retains approximately 95% nickel finish. There is a bit of thinning on left side top of trigger guard. The back strap has a few age freckles. There is also light thinning on right side of frame at grip. The base screws and hammer retain the majority of fire blue, while the exposed frame screws and trigger bluing has faded. All of the screws are true. Basic light handling marks as usually seen on this finish. Grips are crisp. Etched panel still sharp. Action functions both single and double action. Bore is strong with light frosting.
