According to the Colt Factory archive letter, this gun left the factory as a .44/40 with a 4 - 3/4" barrel. It was nickel plated with factory engraving, but the stocks are unlisted. It was shipped to Schoverling Daly & Gales, New York, New York, on July 11th, 1885, in a shipment of 1 gun. This gun has a scroll and foliate engraving pattern with a punch dot background. There are zig-zag borders and other geometric designs incorporated into the engraving. There is a panel on the left side of the barrel that is blank. Two line barrel address, "COLT'S PT. F. A. MFG. CO. / HARTFORD CT. U.S.A.". Three line patent dates on the left side of the frame. "44CF" on the left front trigger bow. Matching serial numbers on the frame, trigger guard, and the backstrap. Two-piece mother of pearl grips. CONDITION: This gun retains traces of the original nickel finish. The engraving is warn and there is some light pitting scattered across the gun. It has been carried and used, but well taken care of. There are a few small chips on the right grip. Fair bore with well defined lands and grooves. The action locks up tight and indexes fine. It has all four clicks.
