According to the Colt factory archive letter, this gun left the factory as a .45 Colt with the barrel, finish, and stocks not listed. It was sold to the U.S. Government and delivered to the U.S. Government Inspector at the Colt plant on September 14th, 1878, in a shipment of 150 guns. This gun was inspected by Henry Nettleton and has his initials stamped on the bottom of the barrel, bottom of the frame, trigger guard, side of the cylinder, left side of the hammer, bottom of the grip, and the top of the backstrap. There is a U.S. stamped on the left side of the frame. Inspector cartouches on both sides of the grip. Matching serial numbers on the frame, trigger guard, and backstrap. The last four digits of the serial number are on the bottom of the barrel, side of the cylinder, and on the back of the grip in the channel. Single line address on top of the barrel and three line patent dates on the left side of the frame. The action locks up tight and indexes fine. CONDITION: This gun retains traces of the original blue finish in the protected areas. It has traces of case color on the hammer. The grip shows some handling marks and some wear. Very good bore with well defined lands and grooves.
