Manufactured as a true pair numbered 1 & 2 and in identical configuration with 30" barrels. Dovetail lump barrels, barrel flats with proofs for choked nitro proofed 12 gauge barrels, and signed in the tapered solid rib "A.T. BATES. MAKER. CANTERBURY"; undersides of barrels have BSA logo. Splinter forearm with checkering in wave patterns and a contrasting ebony tip. Round bodies are fit with rebounding hammers, back action peninsula locks, water tables with serial numbers and Birmingham view proof, and sparsely engraved with lined borders and florals. Double triggers are protected by trigger guards with long tangs and serial numbers. Stocks are walnut with restrained grain, Prince of Wales grips checkered in point-and-wave about the wrist, and fit with an armorial shield at the wrist. Buttplates are checkered horn. Housed in a leather-wrapped double gun case with wine-colored lining and a Boss & Co trade label in lid, with the St. James address crossed out and a notation to the Dover Street address. CONDITION: Barrels retain the vast majority of their reapplied bluing with some minor marks from handling and the field, with some very minor silvering. Evidence of rib and lump relay. Actions and locks are essentially dove grey with scattered peppering, crisp engraving, and oil staining. Blued trigger guards and tang lever bluing en suite with barrels. Stocks are good with handling marks from the field, solid, with some abraded heads; stocks have a few cracks under right locks. Mechanically fine, bores are very good with some light frosting. Barrels are tight on face, barrels ring well. Case is good, leather is pliable with stitching coming loose in some areas; left side is missing the strap catch and the handle strap is broken, missing ring. Lining is good, somewhat faded, trade label is clear.
