(A) Image Size: 13" x 9.5". (B) The 1920s brought this small county into the petroleum business, boasting small but abundant surface pools of crude. Despite oil fraud charges against early prospectors, Howard County experienced its deserved "boom" in 1926, when the previous black gold was found in the Howard- Glasscock field. Wildcatters, speculators and other ambitious settlers increased the county's population three-fold within a short decade between 1920 and 1930, and made it one of the most prosperous counties in the state of Texas.
