In dire need of small arms and ammunition during World War I, Russia contracted with several foreign makers, including Winchester, for armaments. Prior to the Bolshevik revolution, Russia purchased some 290,000 Model 1895 muskets chambered in 7.62x54mmR with stripper clip guides. This example was manufactured circa 1916 and remains in standard configuration for these contract rifles. Fitted with a 28" blued barrel, steel blade front sight, and ladder rear graduated to 3200 meters. Receiver stamped on bridge with Winchester proof and "7.62 / M. M." caliber designation. Full length walnut finger groove forend with handguard, retained by a pair of blued barrel bands, the forward band milled with bayonet lug. Matching walnut buttstock with tool trap buttplate and boxed "XN3" proof stamped on right side. CONDITION: Fair. Barrel retains significant portions of fading blue. Receiver and other steel components have turned a silvery patina with evidence of cleaned oxidation. Stocks show wear with scattered impressions and a small sliver of loss along the top tang. Bore is dark but displays well defined rifling. Good mechanics.
