In addition to their better known production of Zouave rifles, E. Remington & Sons fulfilled April and December 1863 contracts for M1863 muskets. This example remains in standard configuration. It is fitted with a 40" National Army Bright barrel dated "1864" at the breech along with standard proofs, "STEEL", and "E.P.R" inspector markings. Bayonet lug front sight and blued 3-leaf rear sight. Torch colored percussion lock dated "1865" at the tail with standard eagle motif and "REMINGTON'S / ILLION, N.Y." markings. 1-piece American walnut stock bearing a crisp "DL" cartouche on the left flat. Standard bright mounts. CONDITION: Fine. In-the-white components remain bright with areas of patina and spotting. Lock has some cleaned oxidation and vibrant flashes of torch applied colors. Stock is very fine, only scattered light impressions and mild burnout present. Excellent bright bore. Crisp mechanics. A very nice example of a scarce and desirable Civil War contract arm.
