Approximately 1000 Volcanic carbines were manufactured between 1857 and 1860 by the New Haven Arms Co. This example is fitted with a type II ribbed barrel with silver plated brass blade front sight and sharp, possibly reapplied, 1-line New Haven address. Brass receiver is silver plated and characteristically engraved with loose foliates and borders. Left side plate is a replacement, and engraved to match. Plain walnut stock fitted with a silver plated crescent butt plate engraved en suite. CONDITION: Good. Barrel displays a brown gray patina with some added finish. Receiver exhibits portions of silvering, cleaned at some point with the brass starting to mellow. Stock is very fine as cleaned, fit is slightly shy. Lower tang screw stripped. Bore is strong with abrasion in the grooves. Fine mechanics. A scarce and desirable precursor to the iconic Henry and Winchester rifles.
