From 1857 to 1862, Oliver Winchester's New Haven Arms Co. produced approximately 850 of their No. 1 size Volcanic pocket pistols chambered for .31 Rocket Ball ammunition. This attractive example is fitted with a standard blued octagon barrel with German silver cone front sight and 2-line "NEW HAVEN CONN. / PATENT FED 14. 1854" address. The iconic lever action brass frame features full factory silver plating and loose foliate scroll engraving with dot borders and other flourishes, a $1.50 option at the time of its manufacture. Stocks are smooth 2-piece walnut, each panel impressed on the underside with the gun's full serial number. Bolt is numbered "19". CONDITION: Very fine overall. Barrel retains significant portions of original blue within the protected areas of the flutes, the balance turning to gray patina. Frame exhibits nearly all of its pleasantly mellow silver, the high edges thinning to brass. Grips have some have some scattered nicks and wear at the base but are otherwise very good. Bore is bright with strong, well-defined rifling. Fine mechanics.
