Finished in silver with a gold washed cylinder, this fantastic New Model No. 3 target revolver is specially factory engraved with fine punch dot shaded scroll and linework executed by master engraver Gustave Young. After introducing his now well-known Germanic scroll engraving to the United States and engraving for Colt, Young became an in house engraver for Smith & Wesson, a position he held until his death in 1895. Several similarly fine revolvers in this serial number range are known. Number 27885, a similarly engraved and gold washed target revolver just 30 numbers sway, was displayed at the 1893 World Columbian Exhibition and shipped to Olympic shooter Walter Winans. This example is fitted with a ribbed 6 - 1/2" barrel with high blade front sight and adjustable u-notch target rear. Trigger is checkered and a finger spur trigger guard is fitted. Grips are 2-piece mother of pearl inset with dished brass S&W monogram medallions. An included factory letter confirms the configuration as shipped with special engraving, silver finish, 6 - 1/2" barrel, adjustable rear sight, .44 S&W chambering, and pearl stocks. Originally shipped September 25, 1891 as a pair with a matching revolver, number 27856, to Professor John Loris of Loris of Washington DC, a well known exhibition shooter. CONDITION: Fine. Barrel retains approximately 90% of its attractively toned silver plating with some flaking. Frame has an overall dove gray patina with traces of silver plate, the right side with some evidence of older oxidation. Strong traces of gold are retained in the cylinder flutes and engraving, the balance displays a brown patina. Engravings and other markings remain sharp. Grips are fine with a small chip at the left toe and scattered handling marks. Bore is strong and bright with a some cleaned oxidation spots. Crisp mechanics. A truly outstanding and rare Young engraved Smith & Wesson of exhibition quality. A wonderful addition to any collection of fine arms.
