Manufactured by Henry Deringer in Philadelphia in the mid-19th century. Marked with Deringer's maker mark on breech and back action lock. Breech manufacturer's marking is surrounded by rarely seen 2 gold bands. Desirably marked on barrel with Hyde and Goodrich New Orleans agent marking. Scarcely and attractively mounted in both silver and gold, with gold mountings including wedge escutcheon, lock retaining plate, shield near tang area, and on front area of lock. Silver mountings include forearm tip and implement compartment. Accompanied by period unmarked clip point Bowie knife with features including wood grip mounted with gold borders and florally engraved gold endcaps. Bowie knife is complete with likely the original Morracan leather scabbard with matching engraved gold accents. This set is cased in its period original partitioned casing with brass shield on lid, green velvet interior featuring a smocked satin decorative panel, small disc-shaped ingots of lead, projectiles, a tin of percussion caps, period bullet mold, and brass powder flask. CONDITION: Very good for its age, with barrel and lock turned a freckled gray patina. Mountings and trigger guard have been polished bright. Stock is overall very good with large crack near tang on right side, and small crack near lock retaining screw. Mechanically fine. Bore is dark with visible rifling. Knife blade has been cleaned and sharpened, but retains its original shape and is beginning to form a freckled patina. Knife grip is excellent. Sheath mounts are loose, and the leather has stiffened with age. Gold mounts have been polished bright. Case is excellent. Accessories are good to excellent. A unique and attractive set.
