Manufactured circa 1848-1850 by Henry Deringer in Philadelphia. These pistols were so popular, future pistols of small size would be referred to as "Derringers" regardless of manufacture, and were heavily copied during the period as well. These Deringers were used by Gold Rush miners both in and on the journey to California and by American Civil War soldiers for self-defense. Features include octagon barrel with 7-groove rifling, brass blade front sight and notch rear sight mounted to breech tang. Barrel is marked with Deringer's trademark on breech as well as desirably retailer marked with C. Curry San Francisco, California agent marking. Back action lock with nearly full coverage of floral engraving and is marked in the same manner as breech. Mountings are German silver, and are attractively florally engraved. Trigger guard has pineapple finial. Forearm is of the Schnabel type with wedge forearm tip. German silver shield near top of grip near tang is engraved with initials "AH". Stock is walnut with checkered grip. CONDITION: Very good, with iron assemblies turned a freckled brown patina. German silver mountings have been cleaned bright. Trigger guard has a small crack near retaining screw. Stock has small cracks at lock retaining screw as well as forearm tip. Mechanically fine. Bore is packed with grease with sharp rifling.
